We were sometimes taught to see life in a candle
transient, luminescent and mesmerizingly beautiful,
gone in a flash when lit,
and at others, in an ice cream,
with a cautionary enjoy it before it melts
We were not taught to talk of buying new wax or milk
or of less profound electric bulbs and refrigerators.
